Stock Market Outlook This Week: February 6th – February 10th
Whether you’re trading penny stocks or higher-priced stocks, knowing what’s going on in the stock market this week can give you an edge. Following last week’s January/February Fed meeting and surprise earnings from some of Wall Street’s top holdings, volatility is undoubtedly here to stay.
This week may be a bit different and much more focused on Fed speakers and the next round of jobs data. The most recent from the end of January surprised the market.
The January jobs report showed nonfarm payrolls jumped by 517,000. It was much higher than the 187,000 market estimate. The unemployment rate fell to 3.4% compared to the forecast of 3.6%. It is also worth noting that it was the lowest jobless level since May 1969.
This brought back speculation that the labor market was far more robust than anticipated and may need to soften more significantly than initially imagined. Does that mean the Fed will change its stance on rates? Will there still be a chance of a soft landing? This speculation sent markets tumbling at the end of the week last week.
With February’s first full week ahead, the next round of economic and earnings data and central bank speeches could dictate the stock market’s pace for the next few days.

With a hectic week of economic data, central banking decisions, and substantial earnings reports (earnings calendar for this week provided below), investors will have no shortage of things to watch in the stock market this week.
Stock Market News & Events On Monday, February 6, 2022
The week might look lighter than usual, but the events will likely move markets nonetheless. Monday will see primarily international data in focus, starting with January’s UK construction PMI and Eurozone December retail sales. Bank Of England’s Pill speaks, followed by ECB President Lagarde in the early afternoon. Japan reports December household spending data a few hours after US markets close.

Stock Market News & Events On Tuesday, February 7, 2022
Tuesday is one of the more active days for economic events this week. Bank of England’s Pill kicks things off with an early morning speaking engagement. Later in the premarket session, the US. December trade balance and Redbook data also come out. Central banker speeches headline the remainder of the day. These include the Bank of England’s Cunliffe, the ECB’s Schnabel, the Fed’s Barr, and Fed Chair Jerome Powell. There are also a few energy industry data readouts, including the latest API crude oil stock figures and EIA short-term energy outlook.
Stock Market News & Events On Wednesday, February 8, 2022
Wednesday is another lighter day for economic data other than the WASDE report and crude oil inventories. For those who aren’t familiar, according to the USDA, “the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) is prepared and released by the World Agricultural Outlook Board (WAOB). The report is released monthly and provides annual forecasts for U.S. and world wheat, rice, coarse grains, oilseeds, and cotton supply and use. The report also covers U.S. supply and use of sugar, meat, poultry eggs, and milk, as well as Mexico’s supply and use of sugar.”
For those concerned about the price of eggs, this could be something to pay attention to on Wednesday.
Other than that, central bankers will dominate the focus. FOMC Williams and the Fed’s Barr & Waller all have speeches coming mid-week.

Stock Market News & Events On Thursday, February 9, 2022
International economic data will be a hot topic on Thursday. Other than US jobless claims (which will be in a bright spotlight after last week’s employment data), Germany, the EU, and China’s economic reports could sway sentiment. These include Germany’s January CPI, the start of the EU Leaders Summit, the EU economic forecast, and, later in the evening, China’s latest CPI and PPI data.
In addition, central bank decisions and speaking engagements could also factor into the end-of-week stock market forecast. The Bank of England MPC Treasury Committee will hold its hearings. The ECB’s De Guindos will also make comments toward the end of the day.
Stock Market News & Events On Friday, February 10, 2022
Capping off a busy week (including notable earnings below), Friday will start with reports on the UK’s Q4 GDP results. In addition, UK manufacturing production data and December’s trade balance come out early in the day.
The second day of the EU Leaders Summit will also commence starting as the US market opens for premarket trade on Friday. Central bankers, including BoE MPC’s Pill and the ECB’s Schnabel, speak before US markets officially open.
Michigan consumer expectations and sentiment for February report at 10 AM ET, shortly followed by comments from the Fed’s Waller. As markets close, the FOMC’s Harker will speak to end the week of economic events.
