Details also began to surface on Twitter (NASDAQ: TWTR) on Wednesday afternoon. Journalist and podcaster Peter McCormack broke news with a tweet reading, “Breaking John McAfee found dead in his prison cell, this after Spanish courts agreed to extradite him.”
The anti-virus software company founder was arrested at El Prat airport and was awaiting extradition to the United States. McAfee was taken into custody after evading millions of dollars in taxes from the profits that he had supposedly attained from things like cryptocurrency trading. He was also briefly involved in the world of penny stocks. McAfee served as Chief Cybersecurity Visionary of MGT Capital Investments, Inc. (OTC: MGTI). He guided the development of the company’s cybersecurity business. This included the company’s enterprise network intrusion detector released in 2017, Sentinel.
*Update*
In a new update from Gordon Law Group, the apparent attorney for McAfee released a statement saying:
We can confirm that our client Mr. McAfee was found dead in his Spanish prison cell shortly after the Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States. Rumors of suicide are reported, though they have yet to be confirmed.
The firm further expressed its condolences to the family and friends of McAfee. Further, they expressed their sympathy that he wouldn’t have a chance to refute the claims brought against him.
